Want healthy, smooth and glowing skin? Why (healthy) fats are your friend

If you have ever tried to lose weight or are trying to lose weight at the moment and you've gone down the route of completely cutting out fat from your diet , you will soon find that it starts to influence how you look and feel including the appearance and feel of your skin.

This is because fat is really important for your skin cells (and many other cells in the body).

Types of fat

Put down the crisps, chocolate and cake though because they are not the type of fat I’m talking about. I’m referring to the monosaturated and polyunsaturated fats, not the saturated fats.

You may have also heard the polyunsaturated fats referred to as essential fatty acids and omega three fatty acids and omega six fatty acids.

How these healthy fats give you glowing, radiant skin

Moisturisation- if your skin cells contain enough healthy fat, this helps to keep your skin and lips plump and moisturised.

Essential Vitamins- healthy fats contain other Vitamins like Vitamin A and E which are important for moisturisation and skin healing plus reducing inflammation (think redness, psoriasis, rosacea and eczema).

Essential minerals- healthy fats contain minerals like Zinc which is needed for skin healing and repair (think sun damage and scars).

P.S These fats are also essential to give you energy and balance your blood sugar levels.

If your blood sugar levels are balanced , you are less likely to be snacking on the chocolate, crisps and cake.

Which foods contain these healthy fats

Oily fish – one of the best sources – think salmon, mackerel and sardines

Avocados and olive oil

Nuts, especially walnuts

Seeds- a mix like flax, pumpkin and sunflower works well
