Autumn: The essential guide to skincare, body care and emotional wellbeing

We have transitioned from the hot, dry weather of summer to the cooler, damper autumnal days and that coupled with less light and the nights drawing in can impact on your physical and mental health.
You may be having some more aches and pains, your skin might feel drier, your arthritis may be worse or maybe you are feeling a bit anxious or not sleeping very well.
These are natural changes that occur when we move from one season to another and the good news is that there are things that you can do. Here are some suggestions:
Reinstate (or create) an evening wind down routine
The Summer months can feel energising, abundant and maybe involve outdoor, evening activities and later bedtimes with less routine.
This is great in the summer but is not what our body needs in the Autumn and Winter.
How can you get back in to a routine of telling your body that it is time to switch off, unplug and get ready for a good night of sleep?
It might be that you only have five minutes and that is ok.
Can you rub your temples for a few minutes, or maybe give yourself a foot massage?
How about reading a chapter of a book or using an eye pillow whilst you sit or lie down and take a couple of slow, long breaths.
Anything that tells your body it is time to rest.
Like all positive changes, its about incorporating this in to your routine until it becomes a habit.
Listen to the signals from your body- what does it need?
We are all individual, so different factors can cause symptoms like aches and pains, a general feeling of fatigue and low energy or restless sleep but there are things that we can all do to support ourselves.
The power of touch is often forgotten and not valued, but it is extremely effective.
If you can go and have a regular massage treatment, it will help to reset your body (and mind).
If that is not an option for you at the moment, you could have a bath (or foot bath) with Epsom salts which are great for both relaxing you and energising you thanks to the magnesium in them.
This is one of my personal favourites. I don’t think of it as self -care or a thing that I do when I have done everything on my to do list. It is an essential part of my week to ensure I am functioning physically and mentally.
How about massaging the areas where you are feeling some aches and pains or tension.
This stimulates the blood flow to the area.
You could also do some stretches or use a heat pad.
All of these can be done whilst you are watching Netflix!
Using scents (such as natural candles, essential oils and fresh flowers) is something easy to do and this can either invigorate and energise you or relax and soothe you.
Is there something you can do on a daily or weekly basis to look after yourself this Autumn?
